Height vs.Shoe Size vs.Hair Lenght Scatter Plots

http://cantorsappsychologyblog.blogspot.com

Above is the data we collected about our shoe sizes vs our heights. Can you see a relationship? Is there a correlation? If so, is it positive or negative? Does shoe size cause height to change? Does height cause shoe size to change? Does correlation imply causality?

What I see in the graphs is like a pattern. There is a correlation in this graph and what i see is that for example, depending on the height thats what shoe size youll get. What im seeing in this graph is a relationship that guys tend to be taller and for that they have bigger feet. Girls tend to be short and have smaller feet. Correlation doesnt imply causality i think is just apart of life and human nature i think thats how men and woman were meant to be.

What can we see from this scatter plot of hair length vs. height? Is there a correlation? If so, is it positive or negative; strong or weak? What information about the students in our class does this graph give you?

What i see in this graph is complete different data from the other chart. What i see is that shorter people like girls tend to have longer hair, and taller people like boys tend to have shorter hair. This correlation is strong because we see alot of the boys in school with short hair and a few with kind of long hair. The majority of the girls have long hair so this chart shows how the girls and boys differ from each other.

Mariana,

You seem to have a pretty good understanding of positive and negative correlations. I'm also very glad you pointed out that the correlation does not imply that one variable is causing the other.

One thing I'm not sure you understand is strong vs. weak correlations. The top graph is a relatively strong correlation because most points are close to a best fit line you could draw, and as one variable increases the other does too.

The second graph is negative because as one variable increases, the other decreases. It is also relatively weak, because the points are scattered pretty widely and are not clustered closesly to a best fit line you could draw.

Be sure to review with a friend, check chapter 2 and if you are still not sure come see me or e-mail for help.
